acoustic guitar sizes?

Question by ride84: acoustic guitar sizes?
I have been thinking about taking some acoustic guitar lessons, but I do not have a guitar. I have very small hands, and I tried messing around with my brother-in-laws guitar had some trouble reaching things. Are there different sizes of acoustic guitars?

It depends on the sort of guitar. I strongly advise you DO NOT get a classical guitar as these are flat top acoustics that have very wide necks and are used for experienced classical/folk/Spanish finger-pickers. Not a good choice for a beginner! Get a flat top acoustic from Fender (my favourite!!). Fender is a very good quality brand and the necks of their guitars are known for being narrow. They also have thinner strings than other brands (Gibson, Epiphone, Gretsch, etc) low action, and nice, low, easy to play fret bars. However, these guitars are steel stringed and nylon string is a good choice for beginners. But serious guitar players and guitars you plan on cherishing for a long time should be steel stringed.
In case you don’t understand, flat top acoustics are acoustic guitars that do not an arched body (on the face where the sound hole is).
And action is the distance between the strings to the fret-board (the face of the neck). Be careful, the action should be at least 4mm otherwise the strings will hit the fret bars while vibrating whether you are fretting the string or not.
And, if you are willing to sacrifice volume and body in the sound of your guitar for comfort, you can buy a smaller bodied guitar. But the neck should not be shorter, as you will be limited. It should have at least twelve frets, so you can play and advance between octaves, but I go for guitars with at least twenty frets in the first place.
It’s ultimately up to you, and how serious you believe you will be.
Good luck :) Learning to play guitar is a beautiful and inexplicable challenge, prepare yourself for one of the hardest and most challenging things in your life, seriously.
