Really want to learn? I can answer all your questions. Here’s what to do:

>>>should I start with acoustic or electric or does it really matter?<<<
You want to play rock? Then you want electric guitar. There is plenty of acoustic rock, but rock is primarily electric. Some people will say that its easier to learn electric by learning acoustic first.
I say bologna, the acoustic makes every step of learning harder. What they mean is that while acoustic is harder to learn, the electric is comparatively easy. Start with electric - its what you want, AND its easier.

Easy answer? A Squier Bullet, or Epiphone Les Paul Special II, and then you want an amp and the only best options are the Roland Microcube, or the Vox DA-5 those two amps are so FAR evolved over any other beginner/practice amp its insane.
Otherwise do this:
Learn the C Chord. Go to the guitar store and pick the guitar in your price range which is easiest to play the C chord on. Theres NO reason for a beginner to make things harder than they need to be.

Right here is the answer! This is my approach for learning to play the FUN way:

1. List your 10 favorite songs (in any genre).
2. Do a google search for chords for each song on the web.
3. Compare the chords and pick the song with the fewest simplest chords (G, G7, C, D, D7, Dm, E, Em, A, Am).
4. Look up those chords and learn how to finger them
5. Play your chosen song every day, and soon you'll KNOW those chords by heart. Use a simple down down down down rhythm. Play along with the record as SOON as you can.
6. Rinse and Repeat

I've included a link below that has more detail on how to learn so you can dig deeper.

Good Luck,
John
