Get him the fender “strat pack”. It comes with a low end electric guitar, an amp and a cable… I believe that the whole package is about $ 200-$ 250. Thats what I started on 12 years ago… I still have it too… although it is by far not a great sound quality compaired to better guitars… it is sturdy (I dropped mine several times) holds a tune real easy, is easy to string and is reasonably priced for what you get.
