I understand the cords, frets, etc but when it comes to playing anything i read or watch sucks. Before i get an instructer, can someone give me something simple to try?

There are lots of decent lessons on youtube, just type in the name of the song you like with lesson.
Also you can try http://ultimate-guitar.com for video lessons and decent tabs.
A few simple songs include:
