I’m considering taking guitar lessons. I would be mostly playing blues/hard rock but I know that I would probably be playing more traditional songs at lessons so what is a good guitar and amp to buy that would transition well into playing hard rock and blues?

I would suggest the Peavey Vypyr series because it will allow you to adjust your tone to play basically any type of music you’re into. Lot of fun to play, very powerful and loud.

However, the Vypyr isnt your only choice. Check out these 3, all of them are pretty cheap (under $ 200) and good for a beginner:
